The Green Acorn Award Scheme, a voluntary, “green tourism” Award scheme, has been run successfully by SECTA for over 10 years and has been listed as an example of good practice in an Appendix to the BS 8900 British Standard for Sustainable Business. Entry on this site means that the establishment has gained the Award by carrying out at least 25 actions to reduce the impact of their business, and that of their guests, on the environment.
It is simple arithmetic that if we can encourage 50% of establishments to carry out at least 25 actions in reducing their impact on the environment that this is better than 1% of establishments carrying out 50 actions. For most establishments we are just giving public recognition of the good work that they have already have made, encouraging them to to continue with their efforts and sharing their successes and know-how with others.
